Family Bonding at Home: How to Play Charades

  • Posted by: Goshule

Sometimes, the best family memories don’t come from expensive outings but from simple games that spark laughter and creativity. One such timeless activity is charades. This classic guessing game is more than just fun. It is a game where one person acts out a word or phrase without speaking, while others try to guess what it is. Think of it as silent storytelling—with lots of exaggerated gestures, hilarious guesses, and moments of pure joy. You can act out:

  • Animals (e.g., lion, chicken, elephant)
  • Actions (e.g., brushing teeth, dancing, cooking ugali)
  • Movies or Kenyan TV shows
  • Famous people or characters (e.g., Uhuru Kenyatta, Papa Shirandula)

Charades is a brilliant way for parents and kids to bond, reduce screen time, build communication skills, and create unforgettable memories right in the living room.

What You Need

  • Small pieces of paper
  • A pen
  • A bowl or cup to hold the papers
  • Your imagination!

Rules of the Game

Players take turns acting out a word or phrase written on paper while the rest of the family tries to guess it, without using any spoken words. The aim is to guess correctly before time runs out!

How to Play

  1. Prepare the Words – On small pieces of paper, write down simple words, phrases, or actions. For kids, you can use things like “eating ugali,” “riding a bike,” “lion,” or “teacher.” Fold the papers and place them in a bowl.

  2. Divide into Teams – Split the family into two teams (or play in turns if you’re few).

  3. Acting Out – A player from Team A picks a paper and acts out the word silently, using gestures, facial expressions, and movements. They have one minute to get their team to guess.

  4. Guessing – If the team guesses correctly within the time limit, they score a point. If not, no point is awarded.

  5. Switch Turns – The other team takes their turn, and the game continues.

  6. Winning the Game – The team with the most points after all papers are used wins.

Why Families Love Charades

  • No cost — you only need paper and a pen.
  • It builds creativity and imagination in kids.
  • It helps children develop confidence and expression.
  • Laughter is guaranteed, making it perfect for family bonding.
