Brookhouse School Nairobi

It is very hard to research international schools in Kenya and not have Brookhouse come up in the first five minutes of the conversation. And for good reason. Established in 1981, Brookhouse has built its reputation over four decades as one of East Africa's leading British curriculum schools, and today it stands as one of the most recognised names in premium international education on the continent. But reputation alone does not tell a parent everything they need to know before writing a cheque. Here is the complete picture.

Background and Overview

Brookhouse is a private international day and boarding school in Nairobi serving students aged 1 to 18 across two campuses: Karen and Runda. Both campuses follow the British National Curriculum leading through to IGCSE and A Levels. The school currently educates over 750 children from 45 different nationalities, making it one of the most genuinely multicultural school environments in Kenya.

In 2015, Brookhouse joined the Inspired Education Group, a global network of premium schools, which has brought additional resources, international exchange opportunities, and a broader network of peers and educators to the school community. In 2017, Brookhouse became the first school in East Africa to join the elite G-30 group of schools around the world.

The  Campuses: Karen and Runda

Not all Brookhouse experiences are equal, and understanding the difference between their two campuses is important before you make a decision.

The original Karen campus sits on Magadi Road in Langata, a quiet green suburb, with spacious grounds, sports fields, and boarding houses. Facilities at the Karen campus span 15 acres and include an indoor sports centre, a swimming pool, a state-of-the-art performance theatre, modern performing arts studios, and STEM laboratories. The Karen campus is also the only one offering boarding, a significant consideration for families who need or want that option.

The newer Runda campus lies off Kiambu Road in a residential area north of Nairobi. It is a day-only campus and serves families living in the northern parts of Nairobi - Runda, Gigiri, Ridgeways, and along the Kiambu Road corridor, for whom the Karen campus distance would make the daily school run impractical. Parents should visit both campuses independently before making a decision, as the experience and feel of each is notably different.

Curriculum and Academic Pathway

Brookhouse follows the British National Curriculum from the earliest years through to Sixth Form, the same framework used across schools in England, Northern Ireland, and Wales, adapted thoughtfully for an international student body.

The full academic journey at Brookhouse looks like this:

Early Years and Primary lay the academic foundation across core subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Art, Music, Physical Education, and ICT. At the primary level, children study one or more of French, Spanish, German, Chinese, and Kiswahili alongside English, with the goal of students feeling confident in at least two languages by the time they graduate. Language trips and clubs support this beyond the classroom.

Secondary Years 7 to 9 broaden academic exposure across National Curriculum subjects in preparation for IGCSE. Year 9 is deliberately designed as a bridge year, preparing students for the more focused IGCSE pathway ahead.

IGCSE in Years 10 and 11 represents the first major international qualification milestone. Students sit Cambridge IGCSE examinations across a core of English, Mathematics, Science, and a Modern Foreign Language, alongside optional subjects of their choosing. Brookhouse claims the best IGCSE and A Level results in East Africa for over a decade. Parents visiting the school are encouraged to ask the admissions team to substantiate this with specific cohort performance data rather than accepting it as a marketing statement.

A Levels in Years 12 and 13 represent the final and most internationally recognised milestone of the Brookhouse journey. Students narrow their focus to three or four subjects studied in significant depth, with results that open doors to universities across the UK, Commonwealth countries, and increasingly the United States and Europe.

Brookhouse is fully accredited by Cambridge International Examinations, Edexcel, and AQA(Assessment and Qualifications Alliance), and also offers a BTEC qualification option for students who prefer a more applied pathway alongside or instead of traditional A Levels.

International Foundation Year is an additional pathway available for students who need a structured bridge year before university, particularly useful for students transitioning into the British system at a later stage from other curricula.

Languages

Language learning is taken seriously at Brookhouse and goes well beyond the standard single foreign language offering at most schools. Students study one or more of French, Spanish, German, Chinese, and Kiswahili at the primary level, with language clubs and immersive trips providing additional practice outside the classroom.

Admissions Process

Parents complete an online application form, attach academic reports, and pay the KES 45,000 registration fee. The school reviews submitted documents and then invites shortlisted candidates for interviews or assessments. Places are offered on a first-come, first-served basis with priority given to siblings of current students.

The registration fee is non-refundable regardless of whether a place is offered; this is a meaningful financial commitment to make before the admissions outcome is known, and parents should be prepared for this going in.

Students joining Brookhouse at the secondary level from Kenyan curriculum schools are required to have attained an average grade of C+ or above to be considered. The school does accommodate students transitioning from other curriculum systems mid-year, and the teaching staff are experienced in supporting this adjustment.

Who Brookhouse Is Right For

Brookhouse is a strong fit for families who are committed to the British curriculum pathway through to A Levels and are considering universities in the UK, Commonwealth countries, or internationally recognised institutions that accept Cambridge qualifications. It suits children who thrive in structured, academically rigorous environments with high expectations and clear milestones.

For families relocating to Nairobi from abroad, particularly from the UK or other British curriculum contexts, Brookhouse offers seamless curriculum continuity that minimises disruption to a child\'s academic journey. The genuinely multinational student body is also a significant draw for families who want their child to learn alongside peers from across the world.

The Karen campus boarding option makes Brookhouse relevant for families based outside Nairobi or for those who want the full boarding school experience within Kenya.
